These terms govern your use of Backlot, the character-locked AI video production service (the “Service”). By creating an account or using the Service you agree to them. If you are using Backlot on behalf of an organisation, you confirm you have authority to bind it.
1. Accounts and workspaces
You must provide accurate information when creating an account and keep your credentials secure. You are responsible for activity under your account and for the people you invite into your workspace.
A workspace owner controls its members, content and billing. We may suspend accounts that violate these terms or put the Service, other customers or third parties at risk.
2. Your content
You keep ownership of the briefs, images, recordings and other material you upload (“Inputs”) and, to the extent permitted by law and the terms of the underlying models, of the videos, images and audio the Service generates for you (“Outputs”).
You grant us the licence needed to store, process and display Inputs and Outputs in order to run the Service for you. We do not use your Inputs or Outputs to train models.
You are responsible for having the rights to your Inputs. Photos, videos and voice recordings of real people need their consent before you upload them, as section 3 sets out.
3. Photos and recordings of real people
Any photo, video or voice recording of a real person that you upload needs that person’s consent before you upload it. That means everyone who can be identified in it, including each person in a group photo. If the only person in it is you, your own agreement is enough.
Their consent has to cover what you make with it in Backlot: becoming a character or a voice, the scenes, clothing and situations you put them in, the words they are given to say, and where the results will be shown or published. For professional work, record it in a signed release that covers AI-generated likenesses. An employee or contractor has to give their consent personally; it can’t be assumed from their job.
Uploading confirms that you hold this consent, and where the Service asks you to confirm it (for example when you make characters from photos), we keep a record of your confirmation. Consent is not asked for again for each production, so the consent you hold must cover everything you go on to make with that person’s likeness or voice. You must be able to show it to us if we ask.
If someone withdraws their consent, stop using their likeness or voice and delete the characters, voices and outputs made from it that are still in your control. Anyone who believes their likeness or voice was used without their consent can tell us through the contact page, and we may remove the content and suspend the account involved.
Consent never permits the uses section 4 rules out for real people: nothing involving anyone under 18, no sexual content, and nothing made to deceive, defraud or harass.
4. Acceptable use
You may not use the Service to create content that is unlawful, defamatory, deceptive about its origin (including impersonating a real person without consent), sexually explicit, or that infringes anyone’s rights. You may not attempt to reverse-engineer the Service, circumvent usage limits, or resell access without an agreement with us.
Character swap, voice cloning and any other feature that puts a real person's face, body or voice into content may only be used with that person's permission. You may never use them on anyone under 18, to create sexual content, or to make it appear that someone said or did something in order to deceive, defraud, harass or influence others. Before each character swap you confirm this; we keep a record of that confirmation with the run.
Content made with these features is altered, and you must not present it as unaltered footage of a real event. Where the law where you publish requires AI-generated or manipulated media to be labelled, labelling it is your responsibility.
We may remove content or suspend accounts that breach this section, and we will cooperate with lawful requests concerning content made in breach of it.
5. Third-party models
Outputs are generated using third-party AI models and voice services. Their commercial-use terms apply to Outputs, and their availability, quality and pricing may change. We will make reasonable efforts to keep equivalent capabilities available but cannot guarantee any particular model.
6. Plans, credits and payment
Paid plans, when offered, are billed in advance for the period selected. Credits included with a plan reset each billing cycle unless stated otherwise; purchased top-ups do not expire while the account is active. Fees are non-refundable except where required by law.
We may change prices with at least thirty days’ notice, effective at your next renewal.
7. Availability and support
We aim for high availability but the Service is provided “as is” without a guaranteed uptime unless an enterprise agreement says otherwise. Rendering times vary with demand at the underlying providers.
8. Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages, and our total liability arising from the Service in any twelve-month period is limited to the fees you paid us in that period.
9. Termination
You can close your account at any time from settings or by contacting us; we will delete your workspace data within thirty days except where we must keep it by law. We may terminate for breach with notice where practical.
10. Changes and contact
We may update these terms; material changes will be announced in the product or by email before they take effect. Questions about these terms can be sent through the contact page.
